Author’s Notes:
“Beer?”
“Hmmm?”
He jangled the full bottle in front of her and she shifted from foot to foot until finding a comfortable position against the cool counter.
“Oh no. But I’ll take a soda if you’ve got one. I’m driving.”
“Right.” He took back the bottle and began rummaging through his fridge. “So, what’s up?”
“Nothing. Why?”
He peered over the top of the door at her “You just seem unusually quiet this evening.”
“I was just thinking.”
“Haven’t I warned you about thinking too much before?”
“Yes Sir. Once or twice.”
“Good.” He nodded before triumphantly taking out the can of soda and handing it to her. “So what’s on your mind Carter.”
“It’s nothing. I was just…I was thinking of Jonas.”
“Jonas?”
“Yeah. I’ll miss him.”
“I guess, but for somebody to be *that* perky *that* early in the morning just isn’t natural.”
She smiled sadly before finally opening the can.
“It’s not that I’m not glad Daniel’s back. I mean, my God, it’s *Daniel* y’know? But I just can’t help feeling guilty about Jonas. As if we somehow forced him to leave. Like having Daniel back somehow made him not useful anymore. I don’t know, maybe I’m overreacting or something but I just can’t shake this feeling that we didn’t do enough, that we should have done more for him.” She shook her head and looked down at the floor before he tapped her on the arm and she looked up at him.
“Hey, listen to me you have *nothing* to feel guilty about. Not about Daniel and definitely not about Jonas. All Jonas has ever wanted to do is help his people and he’s doing it now. They need him and he’ll help them, not only by ending their civil war, which by the way is a *huge* deal but he’ll teach them about the real dangers out there waiting for them. He can do a hell of lot more for them their then he ever can here on SG-1, and he knows that.”
“I guess you’re right. I just can’t help…”
“I know. But he’s doing what he’s always wanted to do and Daniel’s back with us where he belongs. Besides, Jonas and Daniel together? One over-sensitive anthropologist is enough on any team, doncha think?”
She smiled, “Thank you.”
He nodded casually, “No problem. See if you didn’t think so much you wouldn’t have these problems. You scientists!” he shook his head dramatically taking a drink from the bottle in his hand.
“O’Neill, Major Carter! Han Solo is about to be carbon frozen.” Teal’c yelled from the den.
Jack rolled his eyes, “You know what? Daniel’s lucky he doesn’t remember the previous forty three times he’s watched this.”
Sam smothered a smile. “Yes sir.” And followed him down the hall.
